What tools can I use to manage SQL 2005 databases?

Here are a few good options.

Tools include:

  • SQL Server Management Studio
  • SQL Server Management Studio Express (free)
  • Visual Web Developer Express Edition (free) which includes mature database management tools
  • Many 3rd party tools will work with SQL Server 2005

SQL Server Management Studio can be installed independently on a computer running client/server applications that connect directly to an instance of SQL Server 2005 by running the SQL Server 2005 installation and only selecting ‘Client Components’ to install.

The Client Components option installs the following SQL Server features:

  • Command prompt tools
  • Report Server tools
  • Connectivity components
  • Programming models
  • Management tools
  • Development tools
  • Books Online
  • Sample databases
  • Sample applications

SQL Server Management Studio:
SQL Server Management Studio can be used to manage SQL Server 2005 systems as well as SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 7.0. It cannot be used to manage SQL Server 6.5 or older systems.  A valid license of SQL Server 2005 is required to install the tools.

Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express:
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) provides a graphical management tool for SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (SQL Server Express) instances. SSMSE can also manage relational engine instances created by any edition of SQL Server 2005. SSMSE cannot manage Analysis Services, Integration Services, SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition, Notification Services, Reporting Services, or SQL Server Agent.
